**Please note: there may be spoilers for The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1)**

This is another fantastic instalment from Ms Kagawa in the Blood of Eden series. The Eternity Cure is a full on adventure and Allie is a fantastic character. As with all of Ms Kagawa’s books, I love the writing style, so easy to read and addictive and this one is no exception to that rule.

Allie survived her meeting with her blood brother, Jackal and is now having nightmares when she sleeps, but they aren’t true nightmares, they are visions of what Kanin is enduring while in the evil hands of Sarren. Allie can feel the pull of her Sire and after leaving Zeke, she is now determined to find Kanin and rescue him from the torturing hands of Sarren.

Following the pull between them, Allie travels surviving off thugs and baddies that she finds along the way. The pull is taking Allie to Old D.C. and once she gets inside the fences, she doesn’t find Kanin waiting for her, but somebody that she thought she left behind. They form a pact and decide to call a truce to their fighting, wanting to find Kanin together and discover a cure for Rabidism. Allie decides not to trust him, but figures two is better than one when confronting the likes of Sarren.

After a close call with the Rabids in Old D.C., the pair travels back to where it all began, New Covington. Allie is a little apprehensive of returning to where she was born twice and doesn’t really want to go back.

Following protocol and trying to be good vampires, they go to check in with the Prince of New Covington. Finding that things have changed, the Fringe is no longer safe to humans or vampires. It appears a new strain of the virus has been released and is creating a new version of rabids, bleeders. These crazy psychotic humans tear their own flesh and try to eat anything they can catch before dying. Having to go underground, they find a guide through the sewers and into the City to see the Prince.

Allie cannot be sure who to trust anymore, can she really trust the Prince even though they both want the same thing? Finding betrayal in the Prince’s tower and love, Allie doesn’t know what she will do, but the only thing she does know is that a cure must be found to stop the bleeders virus from spreading. With no humans, the vampire race cannot survive either.

Will they find a cure for rabidism or the bleeders? Does one really exist? Can Allie find Kanin and stop Sarren from destroying him for good? Can a vampire have a broken heart? What will the next adventure be for Allie?

I really enjoyed the twists and the unexpected turns along Allie’s journey. She really did mature in this one and learned from some of her mistakes, but the biggest lesson of all is to come. She had so many questions that she hasn’t gotten the answers to; she was a little annoying about her feelings and the indecision, but I still love her. Allie has such an attitude and I love her cheekiness when she tries to talk herself out of situations. I cannot wait to read book 3, The Forever Song that will come out next year (a whole year to wait, aarrrggghh!)

4 FANTASTIC VAMPIRE ACTION BOOKS

Book #1 - The Immortal Rules

You can read my 5 book review HERE.

About the Author

Julie Kagawa, the New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fey and Blood of Eden series was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel.

When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her Math textbooks during class. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time, but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a real job.

To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dogtrainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full time.

Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and the latest addition, a hyper-active Papillon.

Book Review: Close My Eyes by Sophie McKenzie

Goodreads Summary: When Geniver Loxley lost her daughter at birth eight years ago, her world stopped… and never fully started again. Mothers with strollers still make her flinch; her love of writing has turned into a half-hearted teaching career; and she and her husband, Art, have slipped into the kind of rut that seems inescapable.

But then a stranger shows up on their doorstep, telling Gen the very thing she’s always wanted to hear: that her daughter Beth was not stillborn, but was taken away as a healthy infant and is still out there, somewhere, waiting to be found. It’s insane, unbelievable. But why would anyone make that up? A fissure suddenly opens up in Gen’s carefully reconstructed life, letting in a flood of unanswerable questions. Where is Beth now? Why is Art so reluctant to get involved? To save his wife from further hurt? Or is it something more sinister? And who can she trust to help her?

Ignoring the warnings of her husband and friends, Gen begins to delve into the dark corners of her past, hopeful she’ll find a clue to her daughter’s whereabouts. But hope quickly turns into fear and paranoia, as she realizes that finding the answers might open the door to something even worse than not knowing. A truth that could steal everything she holds close – even her own life.

Genre: Adult Contemporary Thriller

Sournce: Publisher via NetGalley

Well, I don’t know where to start. I originally saw this at the shop and thought it looked interesting and then found it on NetGalley and just had to request it. Once I had started reading the actual idea of what this book will be about it terrified me, I am a Mother to 3 beautiful children aged 5, 3 and 1. The thought of losing a child is horrific enough, but then having a seed planted that the baby hadn’t, well too awful for words. I tried to stop reading this because I was scared to find out what went on, but I just couldn’t put it down and I find this a testament to Sophie McKenzie and her writing ability. The whole way through I kept talking about it with my Mum because it wouldn’t leave my mind. Amazing! Amazing ! and AMAZING!

Art and Geniver (Gen) have been together for 14 years and married for around 10 years. Their life has been prestigious with Art’s business growing from strength to strength and now even including working with the Prime Minister of England. Eight years ago, they became excited that they were expecting their first baby; moving closer to the hospital, Gen became worried that the baby wasn’t moving much and went for a scan. Her Doctor told them that the baby had died in utero and a C-Section immediately would be best for everybody. Gen was overwhelmed with grief and couldn’t believe her little baby girl has died. Not even being able to see her or hold her, she was taken away and a funeral arranged. Art had arranged everything, Gen was too distraught and her life was forever changed.

Becoming depressed and a recluse, Gen couldn’t even bring herself to write anymore. Her best friend, Hen also pregnant for the first time wasn’t even game enough to talk to Gen or show her own baby. They decided to try IVF and after 5 failed attempts, Gen is questioning if she even wants to try that again. The emotional turmoil of hope and failure was too much for her.

One day while Art was at work, Gen had a visitor at her door. Upon opening the door, it was a stranger; a woman that was telling Gen awful awful lies. Lucy O’Donnell had a sister that recently passed away of cancer and with her last breath, told Lucy that the baby was actually alive and her sister helped to cover it up. She had lived with the guilt for eight years and wanted to put things right before it was too late.

Gen doesn’t know whether to believe this stranger; can it possibly be true? Gen speaks with Art and Hen, they both cannot believe it to be true, why would anybody lie about a baby dying, and surely it couldn’t happen! Gen still sees the nervousness of Lucy and how genuine she seemed. Now the seed is planted and hope is reborn.

Gen tries to contact Lucy, but the number is no longer in service. Huh?!? Now what? Going against Art and everybody else that had told her to move on, Gen tries to dig deeper and contact the people involved in her C-Section. But finding people from her past is no easy task and tracking down her Doctor seems to be downright impossible. What is going on?

Nobody wants to give Gen any answers and they all tell her to move on and forget that Lucy even visited. Why isn’t Art interested in the possibility? Where is her Doctor? How come the people involved keep going missing? Is her child really alive?

Follow Gen’s journey through her depression, hope, love and dangerous adventure to find the answers and discover the truth behind her baby. This mysterious, thrilling and emotional expedition that I undertook with Gen left me gasping and OMGing and hoping that Gen can be happy and survive the betrayal and heartache. I highly recommend this book to all contemporary readers even without children because the thrilling story is so addictive. Ms McKenzie is another definite favourite.

Book Review: How Beauty Loved the Beast by Jax Garren

Goodreads Summary: It’s all been leading to this.

Jolie Benoit has become a skilled agent of the Underlight, relying on her savvy to complete assignments while Sergeant Wesley Haukon was out of commission. But an unexpected clue to the Order of Ananke’s diabolical scheme rattles Jolie, and she turns to Hauk for comfort.

It’s been years since Hauk took comfort from the touch of another person, though his love for Jolie is deep and powerful. Uncomfortable in his skin, scarred by a terrible fire, he is unable to give in to the pleasures that Jolie so desperately wants to grant him.

Meanwhile, the Order is lurking in the shadows—and when they strike, the blow is swift and terrible. Hauk and Jolie scramble to fight for their community, but with the future of the Underlight threatened, no one is safe. And Hauk will never be the same…

Title: How Beauty Loved the Beast
Series: Tales of the Underlight #3
Author: Jax Garren
Publisher: Carina Press
Release Date: 13th May 2013
Genre: Adult Steampunk Urban Fantasy Romance
Format: eGalley
Source: via Publisher from NetGalley

**Please note: there will be spoilers for How Beauty Met the Beast and How Beauty Saved the Beast**

Well, what a fabulous conclusion to Tales of the Underlight. I have really loved this series and hope to read more from the characters within in another series. The characters are all lovable, but Hauk is my favourite. He is such an insecure guy, but shows such strength when it comes down to the crunch and boy, all that muscle! Jolie is a wonderful character as well, with her loyalty, determination and patience with Hauk; and she is so passionate, love her. Jax Garren’s writing style has drawn me in and I couldn’t put How Beauty Loved the Beast down, as with the other two books in the series.

After saving Wesley Haukon (Hauk) in the last instalment, Jolie Benoit is determined to have her way with Hauk and draw him out to show his skin. But first Hauk needs to recover from his injuries. Jolie seems to find trouble where ever she goes and during a secret mission while Hauk is in hospital, this is no exception to the rule.

Hauk and Jolie are a part of the Underlight, a secret society that is determined to stop The Order of Ananke (these are the baddies, trying to rule the world). Everywhere they go, Hands of Atropos (the army for The Order) seem to be around and trying to inject their members with some secret serum. It doesn’t seem to do anything at this stage, but they are all worried about what is to come.

While they are trying to work out what is coming, Jolie and Hauk are trying to take their relationship to a new level and Jolie is determined to help Hauk deal with his scars. She wants to show him they don’t affect her that she just wants all of him. After some intense romance, it appears that Jolie has her work cut out for her. Hauk just has too many scars, internal and external; he has promised that one day he will reveal himself fully to her, but right now he can’t. Jolie is heartbroken that Hauk cannot trust her, if he loves her, why can’t he show it?

There appears to be something happening and the members of the Underlight are changing into zombies (so to speak). They are not acting like themselves and trying to head to the surface. Does this have something to do with the injections everybody is being stabbed with?

Can Jolie and Hauk work out what the Order is trying to achieve? Can a reversal be made for the injection everybody is being stabbed with? Can Hauk overcome his insecurities and let Jolie love him completely? Will Jolie finally admit her true feelings to Hauk?

This is one fantastic adventure with Jolie and Hauk. The romantic scenes are both frantic and intense, but then soft and sweet; just like the characters themselves. There are so many variables in this world that has the potential for another great series. I just love Ms Garren’s intense, but fun atmosphere and Jolie with her no bull attitude. I highly recommend this series to all adult romance readers, it is highly enjoyable.

Book Review: Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

Goodreads Summary: Hardships and heartache brought them together…now it will tear them apart.

Layken and Will have proved their love can get them through anything; until someone from Will’s past re-emerges, leaving Layken questioning the very foundation on which their relationship was built. Will is forced to face the ultimate challenge…how to prove his love for a girl who refuses to stop ‘carving pumpkins.’

Title: Point of Retreat
Series: Slammed #2
Author: Colleen Hoover
Publisher: Simon and Schuster UK
Release Date: 18th September 2012
Format: eGalley and Paperback
Source: via publisher from NetGalley and Library

**Please note: this review contains spoilers for Slammed**

OH MY GOODNESS! Point of Retreat was perfect in every way. It continued on from Slammed and I cannot wait to read This Girl to find out what is next for all the characters. Ms Hoover has me addicted to her books and I feel so emotional during and after reading her books that I cannot pick up another for a couple hours. I had to calm down and go wow that was fantastic. I did get a little annoyed with Lake in this one, but only because she was being a total cow towards Will. I really felt for him in this one, poor guy.

After the passing of Lake and Kel’s Mum (Julia) they now seem to be in a routine. Starting college has been exciting and enrolling a challenge, but together with Will and Caulder, they make a happy family. Everything seems to be going along ok; they managed to get separate days at school and are not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Will has one last gift from Julia that they are to open together. Lake is eager to find out what it is, but emotional all the same. It’s the last object left from her Mum and it seems to make everything final. They open the box and find it contains a vase full of tiny origami stars. The note reads from Julia that each star has a little bit of wisdom that may help them find their way. It could be lyrics from a song, a quote or a saying from Julia, but all will hopefully give them some advice to help their life. Since they don’t have anybody but each other, these little stars will give them a little help.

Never finding a moment to themselves, they are never allowed to take their relationship too far. If they ever find a moment in quiet and start kissing, there is always a point of retreat that they call. Lake and Will do not want to get too far in case Caulder or Kel walk in on them. Plus there are also new neighbours across the road and they seem to become part of their mismatched family. Kiersten is an 11 year old with attitude and wisdom of an 18 year old. She speaks her mind and Kel has taken an instant liking to her.

Back at school, Will has his first class and finds a familiar face amongst the students. She starts towards Will and sits next to him; he is astounded that it’s Vaughn. He hasn’t seen or heard from her in 3 years since she broke it off when his parents died and now here she is.

Vaughn turns up at Will’s house one afternoon to talk to him, she wants to apologise for the way she ended things and to try again. Will has asked her to leave, but she starts the waterworks and as Will has the biggest softest heart, he hugs her. This is when Lake walks in, BUSTED! Now everything is in question.

Is Will only with Lake because they have grief in common? Would they have fallen in love if circumstances were different? Could Will love Lake without her baggage?

Will now has to prove himself to Lake; prove how much he loves her and that they belong together. He cannot imagine his life without her. Everything gets tested one night when their whole world comes crashing down. Will they survive?

I love all the characters in Point of Retreat, Kiersten is hilarious with her attitude and Sherry with her homemade medicine. This book is utterly butterflyingly awesome and is a must read to everybody! I can’t wait to read more from Ms Hoover.

Book Review: Poison by Bridget Zinn

Goodreads Summary: Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend.

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart . . . misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

Title: Poison
Series: n/a
Author: Bridget Zinn
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Release Date: 12th March 2013
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Format: eGalley

Poison was such an adventurous read and I loved it. To be honest, it did take me little to get stuck into the drama of the book; but when Fred was introduced, gee whiz, it was certainly intriguing. Fred and Rosie are my favourite characters. The little pig was fantastic, with her quirky little attitude and usefulness, she is definitely my favourite. I really enjoyed the writing style of Bridget Zinn; it has such an easy flow and with strong growing characters, there’s nothing more needed for a fantastic read.

Kyra is on the run; she is stealing, living on the streets and wanted for attempted murder in the Kingdom of Mohr. She was one of the Master Trio of Potioners with Hal and Ned, but since she attempted to kill the Princess, is now a wanted felon.

Kyra is on a quest to locate and kill the Princess, since she missed the first time around. You would think she would be able to find her, since she was her best friend after all, but no, the Princess is hidden. Going to the King of Criminals, she acquired a pig to help sniff out the Princess and so her journey begins.

Kyra’s quirky attitude and unusual behaviour makes reading this book fun; with the added humour of Rosie (the seeking pig) and intriguing abilities that Kyra has, mystery is a certain with this book. While on her search, she tries to cross a river with Rosie perched on her head and has a tumble into the icy cold water. Fred saves the pair and offers them a warm fire and warm food.

Leaving Fred and continuing on, Kyra finds Rosie leads her astray. Now something funny is going on, is Rosie really a seeking pig or was the item she was sniffing not belonging to the Princess? Now Kyra has to work out who is lying and where the Princess really is. And why does Fred keep appearing wherever she goes?

Kyra is a Master Potioner and has expertise with making deadly poisons. With her quick hands, deadly needles can be thrown into her unsuspecting victims. Kyra has a tendency to get into trouble and her friends as well, but seems to be able to get out of trouble just as easy.

Will Kyra be able to find the Princess and get to the bottom of everything that is a mystery to her? Who is Fred really? Who is really behind the Princesses actions?

I really enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns and this certainly has a lot of potential for a fantastic series. I really hope that there will be more from this bunch, with fun and adventure and magic. I highly recommend this book to all young adult fantasy readers.

5 FANTASTIC FUN FANTASY BOOKS

About the Author

Courtesy of Bridget's website
Bridget grew up in Wisconsin. She went to the county fair where she met the love of her life, Barrett Dowell. They got married right before she went in for exploratory surgery which revealed she had colon cancer. They christened that summer the "summer of love" and the two celebrated with several more weddings. Bridget continued to read and write until the day she died. Her last tweet was "Sunshine and a brand new book. Perfect."

Bridget wanted to make people laugh and hoped readers would enjoy spending time with the characters she created. As a librarian/writer she loved books with strong young women with aspirations. She also felt teens needed more humorous reads. She really wanted to write a book with pockets of warmth and happiness and hoped that her readers' copies would show the watermarks of many bath time reads.

Book Review: Losing It by Cora Carmack

Goodreads Summary: Virginity.

Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible-- a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if that weren't embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She'd left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.

Title: Losing It

Publisher: Ebury Publishing
Release Date: 28th March 2013
Genre: New Adult Romance
Format: eGalley

Wow, this was absolutely amazing! I really loved the writing style of Cora Carmack, Losing It was such a joy to read, so much fun and I just couldn't put it down. The tension between Garrick and Bliss was so thick it could have been cut with a knife. This whole topic is something that’s realistic (losing the big V) for everyone and with such an expressive and descriptive scenario I really could feel Bliss’s emotional state.

Bliss is in her final semester of College and she has no idea what she wants to do with herself. Does she act or do stage management? This is only the beginning of her problems this semester. The last weekend before classes start and her friend Kelsey is determined to get Bliss to lose her virginity. Going to a bar, Kelsey and Bliss check out all the suitors around the bar trying to find the most likely candidate to help her lose it!

The bartender looks promising and is definitely interested, but Bliss is full of nervousness. Heading to the bathroom she encounters a man reading in the bar. Finding this odd, she strikes up a conversation and is shocked to find a British, hot man that loves reading. Fighting all of her instincts, Bliss ends up back at her apartment with Garrick and has a very interesting evening. Will Bliss go through with it?

Classes start and life is only getting more interesting, Bliss heads into her class and finds her British hot man now teaching her class. Highly embarrassed and extremely nervous about the consequences, Bliss doesn’t know what will happen. Neither of them realised that this could have been a possibility.

Garrick and Bliss are trying their hardest to ignore and deny their feelings for each other. Knowing that it is forbidden for a Professor and a student to have a relationship, they are not allowed to show their feelings in public. Can they deny themselves their attraction for long? Will Bliss make a decision about her future?

Follow Bliss through her emotional turmoil and the hardest decisions she has to make for her future, both intimately and career wise. Friendships, love, romance, loyalty and fun with humour and realistic issues, this book certainly has it all. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Losing It and have pre-ordered Faking It because I cannot wait to read more from Ms Carmack. I highly recommended to all New Adult readers.
