Interview
How do you come up with your characters? Are they based on real people’s characteristics? Honestly, they’re mostly based on me. That sounds super-arrogant, doesn’t it? J What I mean is, like everyone else, I have my haughty moments, my shy moments, my angry moments, etc., and I just sort of draw those out in different combinations for different characters. If someone I see IRL does or says something unusual, I will often file it away and use it for a character, but for obvious reasons that applies more with my contemporary characters. As far as physicality goes, my characters tend to present themselves to me as I write, but if not I’ll look at famous people or photo streams to nail down certain attributes.Who designed your book cover and why did you choose that particular design?
I don’t actually know who designed the amazing Australian covers (thank you cover god or goddess), but I can tell you I had very minimal input into any of my cover designs. This may seem unfair to readers, but the reality is that publishers need to make money in order to keep publishing books and some authors are notoriously bad when it comes to business decisions. (This is one reason why we have agents). And just because an author really wants to use her seven-year-old niece’s cool instagram photo for a cover, doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for the book.
In one sentence, can you tell the readers why they should read your book?
You should read BELLADONNA because it is dark, romantic, evocative, and shocking and can be enjoyed as a standalone title even if you haven’t read VENOM.
Do you have a favourite non-spoilery scene or quote from Belladonna?
Here’s one I like. Cass is in Florence at a party hosted by the mysterious Belladonna when she gets a headache, but Madalena doesn’t want to leave yet so Cass seeks refuge in the library:
Her head began to hurt worse, blood pounding an uneven tempo in her ears. The guests were loud. Too loud. The airy violin music had sharpened into scalpel blades, each stanza cutting a bloody path across her skull.
Cass found the library and collapsed into a chair. The room was quiet and dim, the only light coming from a scattering of dying orange embers still flickering in the dark fireplace. She turned her back to the wall, refusing to look at the painting of Belladonna draped just as she had once been. What she needed to do was take advantage of this moment and search for the Book of the Eternal Rose. She would, just as soon as her headache faded. Burying her head in her hands, she pressed her fingertips hard against her temples to slow the throbbing.
“Signorina? Are you all right?”
Cass looked up. The silhouette of a man stood in the doorway. Undoubtedly, the handsome house physician. He didn’t sound young, though. Maybe the gossiping hags from tea had been exaggerating.
As the man came closer, his features began to sharpen. Cass dug her fingernails into the armrest of her chair. Her stomach plummeted, and for a second she thought she might faint.
I picked this scene because I like the image of music being able to physically draw blood when you have a headache. Also, Cass is normally too nice to refer to random ladies as gossiping hags, even in her brain, but she has another reason to be stressed here. Finally, I like the build-up to the reveal. Who has stumbled upon Cass when she is vulnerable? Is it Belladonna’s physician...or someone else?
What’s next after the Starling (Secrets of the Eternal Rose #3) and when is it due to be released?
The US will release STARLING on March 1st, 2014, so perhaps you’ll get it a bit earlier. Next I have two contemporary YA novels—a romantic comedy and a murder mystery coming out under my real name starting in 2014. Check out THE ART OF LAINEY:
If you could go back in time, what time would it be, where and why?
I would go back to the 90s because I am a huge music-lover and to me the best music came about in that decade. Also, I wasn’t able to attend all the concerts I wanted to, so I never got to see Nirvana play live.
What’s one piece of technology you cannot live without?
Only one? *trembles*I went on holiday in May and my carryon was so jam-packed with electronics that I got flagged for extra security checks all across the globe. I would have to say my netbook. It’s about four years old and I do all of my writing on it because it has a smaller keyboard and I have little hands. I didn’t realize they quit making them until recently and I freak out when I imagine it dying on me and having to switch to a giant widescreen laptop or a smaller tablet with a sketchy external keyboard. When you are writing, do you have a set routine that gets you started or just go with the flow?
I am basically writing or thinking about writing all the time. When I’m exercising, out with friends, working, on vacation, etc., my brain is always sewing up plot holes or coming up with new ideas. I put notes in my phone. I write them on my hand or on napkins. I have no idea why people put up with this behaviour. As far as actual computer time, I write six days a week with no set routine. I strongly prefer drafting new stuff to revising. I always work on multiple projects—right now I am drafting one, revising one, and proofing 1st pass pages on a third—so that if I am not feeling Project A I can move to Project B and still be productive.

My Review
Phew, what a read, another fantastic instalment of the Secrets of the Eternal Rose series. This secret society seems to be getting even more intriguing and mysterious with each book and I cannot wait for Starling. I loved Venom and loved Belladonna even more. Ms Paul’s writing style is fantastic, so well written and detailed that I could smell and feel the horrible water in the prison; feel the slimy things writhing in the water. Oh boy and the romance, ooohhhh!After the stress of the murdered girls and Luca turning up and saving the day, Cassandra (or better known as Cass) was coming around to the fact that she is inevitably going to marry Luca and Falco has gone.
After awaking from another nightmare, Cass is disturbed to hear noises out her door and finds Luca has been arrested with no reason why. Cass and her Aunt are overwhelmed and extremely upset by this and can’t understand why Luca would be arrested. Now Cass is determined to find out the truth and help Luca to be released.
There is gossip all over Venice about Luca and Cass has heard that he was arrested on heresy against the Church; he is sentenced for execution in one month. Cass speaks with Luca and they are adamant they know who is behind his arrest. Cass has to find the book of The Order of the Eternal Rose to help free Luca and show evidence against Dubois.
Cass is off to Florence with her best friend, Mada. Cass believes the book is located here and will hopefully be able to find it on her trip. Cass ventures to the market and views executions of young women believed to be vampires. So unexpectedly she finds Falco. How is Falco in Florence? Is it fate that they ended up in the same place? Falco is working for very wealthy woman, her name is Belladonna and she is leader of The Order of the Eternal Rose. Belladonna came back from the dead and is still as beautiful as the day she apparently died. Curious about her story, Cass and Mada receive an invitation for tea.
Cass and Mada are invited to attend a party now at Belladonna’s Villa and Cass goes for a walk outside. This is a wrong choice considering it is night and she is attacked by wild dogs. Cass awakes in a room and is being attended to by Piero, Belladonna’s personal doctor. For some reason, Cass is always sleepy and is having horrible dreams that she is being bitten by a vampire. Is there something funny going on?
Can Cass work out where the book is to save Luca? Who is Belladonna really and why is she so young and beautiful? Can Cass forget Falco and concentrate on Luca, her fiancé? What is this secret society working toward and who are they? Will Luca be saved from being executed?
There are so many elements to this series and I am in awe of Fiona Paul. Her talent for writing with such detail and such a complicated story line are inspiring, but it is all easy to follow and addictive, the pages just keep turning. With mystery, lovely romance and with Cass being a little like Nancy Drew, what more could you ask for. The characters develop and mature with each page and I can see Cass grow into a young woman to make the hard decisions she needs to in order to survive. I cannot wait to read Starling to see what happens next. I highly recommend this series to all young adult readers.

Book Review: A Ring Through Time by Felicity Pulman
Today I have the pleasure of sharing my review of a fantastic book set in Australia, well Norfolk Island to be exact. I am not adding the summary like I would normally, it is quite long and if you want the official summary, please click the Goodreads button. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my review.

This book is fantastic. I loved everything about it, from being an Australian to a historical, but also the fact that it was written in the present and then shifted to the past. A Ring Through Time was fantastically written and so intriguing that I just had to find out what happened to both the past and present Alice’s. I loved how present Alice accepted her ancestry and apologised for her rash outburst. My first thoughts were wow, this is so well written and I was drawn in immediately.
Alice (Allie) Bennett was dragged from Sydney to Norfolk Island. Her father had gotten a job and as they were descended from the infamous John Bennett, thought it might be another way to research their family history. Not really happy about the move, Allie had to leave her friends behind, but after a mishap with her boyfriend, she needed to have a fresh start.
Allie’s first day of school and she wasn't looking forward to it. She was in history and they were discussing the local history that mentioned Allie’s ancestor. Allie was pleased and wanted to set the record straight that John Bennett was what the Island needed to bring the criminals to in line. John Bennett was known among the locals as the bloody tyrant; Allie had an argument with her teacher and classmates, Noah in particular. This was not how she wanted her first day to go and Allie was extremely upset about it all. Now she is determined to find the truth.
Allie took on a babysitting job in a residence that is known to be where John Bennett lived. Thinking she hit the jackpot, Allie went searching for any clues that might help her prove John’s innocence. The house is known to have a ghost and Allie thought she saw a woman heading into a room. Freaked out, but still wanting to find something, she followed her. Allie found hidden a journal of Alice Bennett.
Allie found that Alice must have been John Bennett’s daughter, but hasn’t heard any mention of him having daughters. Reading the journal Allie was taken back in time to when the convicts inhabited the Island and through the eyes of a teenager, read a detailed life of a tyrant’s daughter. Reading of a love story that was forbidden and the tragedy that followed, Allie has found her answers.
Follow along as Allie reads Alice’s story and her forbidden love; but also the feelings that Allie starts to see for Noah. This is such a fantastic book by Ms Pulman that I had tears coming down my cheeks without realising I was crying. There is such a tragic love story back in early settlement and has everything, betrayal, ghosts and your heart will go through so many emotions from heartache to remorsefulness to elation. I have found another favourite author in Ms Pulman and cannot wait to pick up another of her books. This is one amazing book and I highly recommend to all.
5 FANTASTIC HISTORICAL BOOKS
I grew up (a long time ago!) in a small bush town in Africa. No TV, iPods, computer games and surfing the internet – you could say I had a very deprived childhood! Not so. Instead, for entertainment I learned to read. Books became my windows to the world: they told me about dragons and fairies and magic. They told me about other countries and other cultures. They told me about myself. And I have never stopped reading, because I love stories.
I guess I always did things back to front – the hard way! In Africa, when I ran out of books to read, I wrote my own. I love writing stories, but I never thought about it as a grownup occupation. As a grownup, I had to go back to school to find out that I really was a writer. After doing the HSC at the age of 40, I went on to do a BA (Communications) degree at UTS. My major was creative writing, and suddenly I found myself experimenting with all sorts of genres and, in particular, writing the sorts of stories that I love to read – crime and timeslip fantasy back into the past.

Before he could think of his next move, the man opened his mouth and, speaking English without any accent asked, “Hey Cray – how much longer? Daylight’s not too far away,” he called out.“Awww, Denny, relax! They’re on double daylight savings time here,” an amused voice called out from behind Neil.
Neil heard a whoosh of air and before he could turn around, he felt a hand on his shoulder.
He followed the hand on his shoulder, and found himself staring into pale blue eyes. Eyes that seemed to bore into Neil, forcing him to drop the knife, which he’d been holding out poised to strike. The man reached over with his other hand and took the knife, tossing it to the side, saying, “You won’t be needing this, friend. We've our own ways of getting your flesh and blood.”
Neil knew he should have been afraid – he was afraid – but he couldn't move; for some reason, he was rooted to his spot. One side of his brain screamed fight, fight, fight! But another part of him just wouldn't allow it. Maybe it was because he knew the man was strong and he could feel that his shoulder might break from the crazy man’s grip.
It did break. Neil heard a loud snap! and felt the pain shoot forth from his shoulder down his arm and across his chest. Through the pain, he thought he heard someone say, “Sorry chum, but I like it when the marrow gets into the blood, with the adrenaline. Makes it tastier.”
Neil tried to scream, but something was at his throat, almost strangling him. He felt the fire of his shoulder meld with the burning at his throat. All he could do was look up, into the street lamp, and into the white light that quickly engulfed his entire body.

Neil knew he should have been afraid – he was afraid – but he couldn't move; for some reason, he was rooted to his spot. One side of his brain screamed fight, fight, fight! But another part of him just wouldn't allow it. Maybe it was because he knew the man was strong and he could feel that his shoulder might break from the crazy man’s grip.
It did break. Neil heard a loud snap! and felt the pain shoot forth from his shoulder down his arm and across his chest. Through the pain, he thought he heard someone say, “Sorry chum, but I like it when the marrow gets into the blood, with the adrenaline. Makes it tastier.”
Neil tried to scream, but something was at his throat, almost strangling him. He felt the fire of his shoulder meld with the burning at his throat. All he could do was look up, into the street lamp, and into the white light that quickly engulfed his entire body.

Book Review: Slave Girl by Alexa Moses

I always love discovering Australian Author’s; they are always interesting and diverse. Alexa Moses is no exception to this rule and Slave Girl was a great read directed at Middle Grade-Young Adult. The easy flow of the writing style was fabulous and the characters were fun.
Jenna Bookallil-Brown is a 13 year old on an exchange
program, currently visiting museums in New York. Jenna is very excited to be in
New York staying with her Great Aunt and trying to become the sophisticated,
fashion conscious teen that every girl wants to be. Jenna is visiting the
Metropolitan Museum and has an appointment that she must get to. Her chaperone
will not allow her to leave and Jenna is torn whether to disobey or just suck
it up.
Jenna notices a strange cat under the bench she is
contemplating on and the cat watches Jenna in return; how strange. The cat
jumps onto the bench and steals the envelope with all Jenna’s money for her
appointment. OMG – a cat stealing an envelope full of money, haha. Jenna takes
off after the cat to rescue her treasured envelope.
One second Jenna was in the Museum and the next in a strange
room with a party themed with people in Egyptian costumes. Huh, Jenna has no
idea what is going on, why would there be a party at the Museum like this?
Jenna is still chasing the cat, spots it behind a group of dancers. Trying to
stay inconspicuous, she crouches and waddles over towards the cat; the cat
takes off, Jenna gets caught and is taken into a room with a bunch of other
girls.
Jenna still doesn’t know what is going on and everybody
doesn’t seem to know what she is talking about or understanding her way of
talking. Before long Jenna is taken to the kitchen to start her daily duties,
she is now a slave.
Will Jenna find that dastardly cat? Can she find her way
home to New York in her current era? Will she be able to survive being a slave
and all it entails?

About the Author:Alexa Moses graduated from a masters degree in screenwriting at the Australian Film Television and Radio school in 2001, thinking she wanted to write comedy, but got a job as a reporter at The Sydney Morning Herald instead and discovered she loved journalism.
Over her six years at the Herald, she worked as an arts and features writer and entertainment reporter, along the way stalking Nicole Kidman, writing about the Asian tsunami she survived, panthering her way through the deportment course Princess Mary took before becoming royalty, and receiving hate mail during her time as a film critic. In 2007, she won the VarunaHarperCollins fellowship for her first manuscript. More recently, she’s been working as a novelist and screenwriter for children’s television including The Woodlies, Gasp the Goldfish andThe Davincibles.
When she’s not reading and writing, Alexa spends her time knitting, cooking, watching sitcoms and musicals, and listening to maudlin pop music.
